Culture and Government (Mon-Tues)

Today we began to look at what Culture is in a society. We compared "Material Culture", or pieces of a culture that we can touch and hold (ex. watch, computer, car, iPod, etc...), and "Nonmaterial Culture", or pieces of our culture that are more ideas (ex. freedom, fairness, religions, beliefs, etc...).

We then moved into one of the more important parts of culture - GOVERNMENT. Why government? Because that is the part of our culture that often makes the rules and laws that we live by, and impacts the other cultures of our society. We spent much of the time talking about
the three ways to classify government with advantages and disadvantages of both.

HW: For Wednesday/Thursday, students need to...
  1. Summarize in their own words each of the 3 ways to classify governments.
  2. Create their own governmental system with each of the 3 ways to classify. For example, maybe you would like to see a Presidential, Democratic, Unitary system. Why would that be a good system in your opinion? What are some strengths and weaknesses with this type of system. Write this up in about a 1/2 page response.
