1900 vs. 2000 Immigration

Today we are going to be looking at modern day immigration from areas of Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Students will be breaking the topics up in the same way we did for immigration that occurred in 1900 (why come to the U.S., contributions, and struggles). Students will then be taking everything they have collected so far about immigration then and now and creating a pretend interview with an "immigrant" from the 1900s and with an "immigrant" from today. Your goal is to see how immigration from a long time ago is both similar and different than immigration today.

An example could be...
Question #1: Why did you leave your homeland to come to Minnesota?

Answer (German): I left because I was looking for a chance at more opportunities. In Germany, we did not have access to land the way we do here in America so that would help make a better life for my family.

Answer (Latin American): Being from Mexico originally, I too did not have access to some of the opportunities that are found here in the United States. I came to Minnesota for a chance at a better job and education for my children. Also, I wanted to open my own business so Minnesota made sense since it has a pretty good economy.

Question #2: ......, etc.

When students walk in on Friday they should be able to talk about similarities and differences between immigration that happened 100 years ago and immigration that is taking place today.
